Who Was St Barnabas

St Barnabas 2.png

Barnabas, one of the earliest followers of Jesus, was a generous and courageous leader in the early Church. Originally named Joseph, he was called Barnabas, meaning “son of encouragement,” a title that reflected his character.

He first appears in the New Testament when he sells land and gives the proceeds to help the poor. Later, when others feared Paul after his conversion, Barnabas trusted God’s guidance, befriended Paul, and helped begin his ministry.

Barnabas was compassionate and willing to give others second chances — as he did with John Mark, who later became a valued helper of Paul. In Antioch, Barnabas rejoiced in the faith of others and worked with Paul as many became Christians; it was there that followers of Jesus were first called “Christians.”

Born in Cyprus, Barnabas remained faithful to God until his martyrdom there around AD 61. His life of generosity, courage, and encouragement is celebrated on June 11, his feast day.

Bountiful God, giver of all gifts who poured your Spirit upon your servant Barnabas and gave him grace to encourage others; Help us, by his example, to be generous in our judgements and unselfish on our service; through Jesus Christ your Son, our Lord.

Amen.

If you want to ask God to inspire your life and faith by the example of Barnabas why not think about these questions:

Barnabas was willing to risk everything to tell people about Jesus, he gave away money to help the poor and he invested in people and their faith and ministry.

  • What has God given you to be passionate about?

  • How are your personal gifts and strengths being used for God?

  • Whom do you see being excluded from the Church and from society?

  • Can you be a bridge like Barnabas?

  • Who are the people who like Barnabas support you and hold you accountable in your continued growth in faith?
